OKTOBERFEST – The World’s largest beer festival originated on the 12th of October 1810 when Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The entire town of Munich was invited to attend the celebration on fields outside the ancient city walls. Later the site was named Theresienwiese by town officials in honor of the Princess. Today Oktoberfest is simply referred to as Wiesn by many Munich and Bavarian locals.

The OPENING PARADE:
The tradition of the Oktoberfest starts with the procession of Clydesdale horse drawn beer wagons, floats and the beer tent bands led by the Münchner Kindl the symbol of Munich. Followed by the town Mayor who rides in the Schottenhammel family carriage.
The OPENING CEREMONY:
Following the parade, at exactly 12:00 p.m. in the Schottenhammel tent the official opening of Oktoberfest takes place! The Mayor of Munich taps the first keg of beer and announces the Bavarian phrase “O’zapft is!” Which is Bavarian for “Es ist angezapft” The first keg is tapped! This marks the official start of OKTOBERFEST!
TWELVE GUNSHOTS are then fired on the historic stairway of Ruhmeshalle.
This is the start signal that Oktoberfest has begun!
